Some winemakers chase perfect scores. Anthony Allport chases the perfect wave and the perfect vine.

Allport grew up surfing the powerful swells of the South Pacific. Today, he is channeling that exact coastal energy into his latest venture: Ocean Potion One Liter. It is a wine project that blends serious New Zealand viticulture with a playful splash of maritime folklore. The name itself nods to the "elixir" of life found where the ocean meets the vine.

To understand Ocean Potion, you have to look at where it grows. Allport’s vineyards sit just a stone's throw from the coast in Marlborough’s rugged Awatere and Blind River sub-regions. Here, the vines are battered by heavy, cool ocean winds.

While that might sound punishing, it is exactly what gives the wine its edge.

These freezing maritime breezes force the grapes to develop thicker skins. This defensive reaction concentrates the fruit's natural sugars and flavors. Most importantly, it imparts a distinct, unmistakable salinity directly into the juice.

In the cellar, Allport practices a philosophy of radical restraint. Ocean Potion relies entirely on native yeasts and minimal intervention.

"We want the true taste of the ocean terroir to shine through," Allport says. "No heavy hands, no masks."

The brand champions sustainable, cool-climate winemaking from soil to glass. Even the packaging breaks convention. By bottling the wine in a generous One Liter format, Allport signals that while the winemaking is serious, the vibe is entirely casual. It is a wine built for sharing.

Ocean Potion is a literal breath of fresh, salty air on a warm summer day. It captures the raw, energetic spirit of the New Zealand coast and pours it straight into your glass.

ONE LITER MARLBOROUGH SAUVIGNON BLANC 2025

Tasting Notes

This inaugural 2025 vintage is a textbook Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc heavily shaped by its coastal environment.

  • Nose: Vibrant and intensely aromatic, leading with zesty lime, crushed gooseberry, and tropical passionfruit. Underneath the fruit lies a distinct, sea-spray minerality.

  • Palate: Crisp and refreshing, balancing bright citrus and white peach with a signature delicate saline nuance. The mouthfeel is electric, driven by a tight, mouth-watering acidity that leaves a long, refreshing finish.

  • Food Pairing: Perfectly suited for freshly shucked oysters, pan-seared scallops, or a classic, casual fish and chips dinner on the beach.
